FYI: Countertop info, just scratching the surface….

I saw and interesting blog post this morningĀ regarding countertops. Often , this topic is a source of stress for my clients. Issues brought up by homeowners are hardness, resistance to bacteria, heat resistance, coldness to touch & ‘cleanability’. Here is a list according to a hardness rating by Moh’s scale of mineral hardness:

 

Laminate: 1.0 on the Mohs Scale
Soapstone: 1.0 on the Mohs Scale
Solid Surface: 3.5 on the Mohs Scale
Butcher Block: 3 to 4 on the Mohs Scale
Marble: 2 to 5 on the Mohs Scale
Glass: 5.0 on the Mohs Scale
Slate: 6.0 on the Mohs Scale
Stainless Steel: 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs Scale
Granite: 5 to 6.5 on the Mohs Scale
Engineered Stone (composite quartz): 6.5 on the Mohs Scale
Quartzite: 7 on the Mohs Scale
Ceramic or Porcelain Tile: 7 on the Mohs Scale
Concrete: 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs Scale
